The Flatonia High School softball team throttled Louise High School March 28 at Lady Bulldogs Field by a final score of 15-0. This score came by mercy rule in three innings as Louise struggled to throw strikes while Flatonia capitalized when the Lady Hornets were able to throw the ball across the plate.

“Hitting wise, we got a couple big hits,” said Flatonia head softball coach Shawn Bruns.

“They had seven or eight hit batters. They didn’t walk as many as last time we were down there, but she hit quite a few. When the pitcher does that, you got to take advantage of that situation and our girls did. I’m proud of them taking care of business like they’re supposed to.”

Flatonia senior catcher Peyton Guzman hit an early double, then a single that turned into a double and two RBI’s to help her team to victory. “My main approach this season has just been to stay calm and stay within myself,” Guzman said. “I’ve been really tight the past couple seasons, so I’ve just been trying to stay loose and focus at the plate.”

Lady Bulldogs freshman pitcher Summer Sodek thew a perfect game in this outing as there weren’t any Louise batters who reached base safely. Flatonia scored 12 runs in the first inning on Guzman’s big hits, a ton of walked batters, and a few other base hits.

After a clean inning from Sodek in the top of the second, Flatonia continued their surge with a base hit from sophomore Sadie Noska and a pass ball on which Noska scored to make it 13-0. More wild pitches and hit batters put the score at 14-0 going into the top of the third inning.

Sodek then retired the side with no damage done in her next trip to the mound before the Lady Bulldogs added one more run in their last at bat, this time on another wild pitch after a bunt and a walk, forcing the umpires to call the game by mercy rule in the bottom of the third inning in favor of Flatonia for a 15-0 victory.
