COLUMBUS — National Correctional Officers and Em ployees Week is set for May 7 to 13 in Colorado County.

Colorado County Judge Ty Prause read aloud the proclamation at the regular Commissioner’s Court meeting on April 24.

President Ronald Reagan first proclaimed National Correc- tional Officers and Employees Week on May 5, 1984, when he signed Proclamation 5187 creating “National Correctional Of- ficers Week'' to recognize the men and women working in jails, prisons, and community corrections across the country.

National Correctional Offi cers and Employees Week be- came the official name the first full week in May when, in 1986, the US Senate official ly changed the name from “Na- tional Correctional Officers Week."

It honors the work of correction- al officers and correctional per sonnel for their service with honor, respect, and integrity. It also raises awareness of the duties, hazards, and sacrific es made by the Correctional Workers.

National Correctional Offi cers and Employees Week in Colorado County recognizes Colo- rado County Sheriff's Office Corrections Division employees for their role in safeguarding the citizens of Colorado County by providing safe, secure, and humane incarceration of offenders within their custody.

So often behind he scenes yet an integral part of the overall justice system, the correctional officers make sure of the safety of inmates while sacrificing so much for their own family time with shifts that at most times fall on too many holidays.
