COLUMBUS — The Columbus High School softball team competed in a playoff match against Marion High School April 28 at Lady Cardinals Field and was victorious by a final score of 10-0. Columbus was solid on both sides of the ball with stellar pitching and finding open holes at the plate.

“It kind of led tonight by our seniors,” said Columbus head softball coach Alfred Rosa.

“Madyson Carter and then the pitching with Mayson Post. This team can just hit and defensively, if we just pitch to contact, we’re gonna get a lot of outs. That’s just kind of how we play our game.” Lady Cardinals senior Madyson Carter launched a home run over the left-centerfield wall in the bottom of the third inning to give her team a 5-0 lead. Carter also recently signed to play college softball at the University of Dallas.

“I really didn’t until I heard all my teammates cheering me on,” Carter said on if she knew she hit a home run when the ball hit the bat. “Honestly, I was just looking for a stand up double and next thing you know, I see Coach Rosa celebrating. It was big.”

The Lady Cardinals scored in their very first at bat on an infield hit from Carter, two walks, and a couple stolen bases to take a 1-0 lead. Two more runs were put on the board in the inning from a pass ball and a base hit blooper to right field from senior Mayson Post.

Columbus tallied one more run in the second inning on a base hit to centerfield from Molly Garcia, two stolen bases, and another base hit to center, this time by Mia Post. Following Carter’s home run in the bottom of the third inning was a single down the left field line from Mayson Post, an error on a grounder to the shortstop, and a single to left from Mia Post to drive in two runs and make it 7-0.

Mayson Post added one more single in the bottom of the fourth inning, then an Isabel Kainer walk and double from Garcia put Columbus ahead 9-0. Mia Post connected on a ball for a base hit to right field in the bottom of the fifth inning before Karlee Mathis performed a sacrifice bunt to put a runners on first and third as Mathis reached base safely. Ellie Brown would walk it off with a base hit down the right field line to drive in a run and win the game 10-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning by mercy rule.
