The month of May is Mental Health Awareness Month and as such Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek is pleased to report that from April 20 through the 22 a number of deputies and local police department officers were able to attend the Texas Crisis Intervention Team Association conference in Sugar Land. The conference provides an opportunity to network with other law enforcement agencies and mental/behavioral health providers to share and learn from each other’s approaches to handling mental health crises and treatment in their different areas.
Deputies/officers received specialized training on various topics such as suicide prevention, crisis intervention in schools, bullying, mental health issues involving “sovereign” citizens, threat assessment, and other subjects.
Attending this training would not have been possible without the partnership of the Fayette Community Foundation and their Red Door Fund for Mental Health, who fully sponsored these personnel to be able to attend the conference. Korenek said, “We are extremely thankful for the relationship we have developed with their organization and their generous assistance in helping to provide and improve training and resources for our local law enforcement in working with those living with mental and behavioral health concerns.”
