Just yesterday

I watched my grandsons level up in their scouting ranks this past Sunday. It seems just yesterday that I was holding them in my arms, pretending to drop them, and they were laughing up a storm because they knew Grandpa wouldn’t drop them. Just yesterday, I spent time with my grandparents–one in town and the other in the country. I loved them all. Just yesterday, I was watching Mom and Aunt Patsy performing in a play at Mentz Hall. I think it was Chattanooga Choo Choo. Now, it seems just yesterday, they both are no longer within arms reach.

I watched my grandsons level up in their scouting ranks this past Sunday. It seems just yesterday that I was holding them in my arms, pretending to drop them, and they were laughing up a storm because they knew Grandpa wouldn’t drop them. Just yesterday, I spent time with my grandparents—one in town and the other in the country. I loved them all. Just yesterday, I was watching Mom and Aunt Patsy performing in a play at Mentz Hall. I think it was Chattanooga Choo Choo. Now, it seems just yesterday, they both are no longer within arms reach.

Just yesterday, I went to a little schoolhouse in Bernardo with only five or six kids in my class and then on to Columbus with 30 kids in my class: no more Dick and Jane, Sally and Puff and Spot. Just yesterday, I remember my first boy-girl dance at the golf house, where I danced with Darlene to Hey Jude. That is a long song but worth it. Just yesterday, I wished I had my driver’s license so I could go and go and go. Now my go-and-go has got up and left. Just yesterday, I married Dianne after four years of dating. I am still dating her 46 years later; it seems like it was yesterday.

Just yesterday, I had two boys and now grandkids I treat as my own kids. Oh, how many yesterdays did I not mention? How many yesterdays did I let slip by without thanking God for each and every one of the days?

Watching my kids and grandkids grow up before my eyes made me wonder how many yesterdays I forgot. How many yesterdays do I still have in front of me?

It’s getting harder for me to remember what I did on the actual yesterday! It’s getting easier to remember the other yesterdays.

Take time to remember your yesterdays and cherish your tomorrows that become today and then fade into yesterdays.

Psalms 143:5 - “I remember the days gone by; I think about all that you have done, I bring to mind all your deeds. I lift up my hands to you in prayer; like dry ground my soul is thirsty for you.”
