The Schulenburg High School volleyball team put the area on notice for the 2022 season after a state tournament run and were recently recognized by the Houston television station KHOU. The team was honored at a Shorthorns basketball game January 3 and were featured by the KHOU Inside High School Sports Chevy Spotlight Team while accepting a good sized trophy for their big season.

"It's a great honor," said Schulenburg head volleyball coach Donald Zapalac. “Anytime you get recognition from the media, newspaper, radio, TV, we’re always very appreciative of any kind of help we can get there. I think they took notice of the struggles we had early in the season and saw how far we had come. Making it all the way to the state tournament was a pretty thrilling effort for this group of young girls. We were really proud of the way we rebounded and put some things together to make it all the way to the state tournament. For them to recognize that and do a little story on us for it is just an honor for us." Lady Horns volleyball returns a bunch of athletes next year and could very well make a second consecutive run to Garland for a state bid.
