Summer Day Camp offered by ACCSS

It’s never too early to start talking to your children about what they want to be when they grow up. Eventually the “princess” and the “MLB player” will need to start planning about what their path to post-secondary success will involve. Will this be college stepping towards a career? Or trade school? Or stepping straight into their career from high school because of credentials they earned during this time?

The Alliance for College and Career Student Success (ACCSS) in South-Central Texas is a unique partnership between Blinn College District and five area school districts including Columbus, Fayetteville, Flatonia, Schulenburg, and Weimar. It is the mission of ACCSS to provide academic and career resources, guidance, and support necessary for students to prepare for post-secondary success. This involves increased participation in both academic and CTE dual credit courses in targeted career pathways. The pathways students have to choose from include 42 Texas Core Curriculum, Allied Health/Nursing, Welding, Construction & Building Trades, Teaching, and Agri-Business.

ACCSS will offer a special one-day camp on Thursday, June 8, at Blinn College – Schulenburg Campus from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This special Day Camp is being provided for 6th and 7th graders and fifth graders who have not had the chance to participate in the 'If I Had a Hammer' program. The Hammer-Build transports students out of the classroom to have an on-the- job experience. Throughout the build, students learn the value of math application, goal setting, teamwork, and workforce development skills. The Hammer-Build provides an educational day that students will never forget. In two hours, students work together using hammers, drills, tool belts, and goggles to build a house large enough that the entire class can get inside. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to explore careers with Virtual Reality, along with other fun group activities.

There is a $10 fee to participate with a few exceptions. La Grange ISD students who wish to participate will be sponsored by the generosity of the La Grange Lions Foundation. Schulenburg ISD students are being sponsored by the Schulenburg Chamber of Commerce. Scholarships are available in special circumstances. All students will receive a T-shirt and lunch. For information and to register, please contact ACCSS Program Support, Regina Schramek at (979) 7435214 or regina.schramek@blinn. edu. Payment may be dropped off at Blinn College - Schulenburg Campus (100 Ranger Dr., Schulenburg) Monday - Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
