RESS SCHULENBURG — The annual Memorial Day Observance was held on May 29 at Wolters Park in Schulenburg. As it was across the nation, veterans and their families and those who wanted to publicly honor those who lost their lives in saving ours gathered together to remember the fallen.
Schulenburg American Legion Post 143 hosted the event with Post Commander Bob Heinrich as emcee. Special guest speaker Fayette County Judge Dan Mueller gave an inspiring speech with D’Vine Testament providing inspiring and patriotic songs.
Sponsors were Schulenburg Post #5623, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S., Schulenburg McBride Post #143, American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary and Chapter 870, and Vietnam Veterans of America and its Auxiliary.
Original to 1868 when it was known as Decoration Day, the Congress made Memorial Day a federal holiday in 1971 to reflect on our true freedom.
Many places in the U.S. claim the spot as the first to celebrate Memorial Day.
However, in 1966 Waterloo, NY was identified as the official birthplace and signed into law by President Johnson.
