There are six basics you should stock in your home: water, food, first aid supplies, clothing, and bedding, tools and emergency supplies, and special items. Keep the items that you would most likely need during an evacuation in an easy-to-carry container. Possible containers include a large, covered trash container, a camping backpack, or a large duffel bag.
•Water — Store water in plastic containers. Store one gallon of water per person per day. Keep at least a three-day supply of water for each person in the household.
•Food — At least a three-day supply of non-perishable foods. Select foods that require no refrigeration, preparation or cooking and little or no water.
•First Aid Kit — Assemble a first aid kit for your home and one for each car. Include non-prescription drugs such as aspirin, non-aspirin pain reliever, antacids, and diarrhea medicine, and any prescription drugs that you require.
•Tools and Supplies — Include flashlight and extra-batteries, non electric can opener, plastic storage containers, personal
hygiene items and any other essentials you may need.
•Clothing & Bedding — Include at least one complete change of clothing and footwear per person. Bring additional blankets, sleeping bag and pillows because the Red Cross shelters do not provide cots or blankets.
•Special Items — Include baby’s formula, diapers, bottles, powered milk, any medication needed. Bring along books and games to keep children entertained. It also is recommended that you bring along any important family documents.
