The meal is a real Texas style open pit barbecue served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The cost to make your plate and dine in is $15 for adults and $8 for children 10 and under. LEARN TO PLAY CHESS

WEIMAR - Remember last year when you said, Maybe I would benefit from learning to play chess? Well, here's your chance. David McCall, scholastic chess coach, returns to Weimar Public Library to offer free instruction in the game of chess. Classes are scheduled to begin today (Thursday, June 8) from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The class is sponsored by the Friends of the Weimar Public Library. ST. JOHN TO HOLD ANNUAL JULY 4TH PICNIC SCHULENBURG - St. John Parish, located at 7026 FM 957 in Schulenburg, will celebrate the 135th year of its Annual 4th of July Picnic. St. John the Baptist will hold mass at 9 a.m. and a flag raising ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. The stew and fried chicken meal will begin serving, dine-in or take home, at 10:30 a.m. for $12 per plate. Musical entertainment begins at 10:30 a.m. A live auction will begin at 12:30 p.m. The event will include a raffle drawing at 8 p.m. and fireworks show at 9:30 p.m. The event will include beer, soda water, snow cones, hamburgers and more, country store, cake walk, ball throw, ring toss, lil diggers sandpile and more entertainment. SEALY KC'S GRILLED PORK STEAK DINNER

SEALY - The Sealy Knights of Columbus will be serving their Famous Grilled Pork Steak Drive Thru Dinner for $12 a plate on Sunday, June 25, at the Sealy Columbus Club (KC) Hall at 1310 Hwy 90 West in Sealy. Serving from 10:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (or until sold out). Proceeds from this event will benefit Sealy KC programs.

CVQG PROGRAM ON FORENSICS OF QUILTING LA GRANGE - Please join the Colorado Valley Quilt Guild on Tuesday, June 27 at 6 p.m. at the Randolph Recreation Center at 653 E. Pearl St, Room A East in La Grange. Guest presenter, Jammie Ackley, of Trinity, is a professional long arm quilter and certified instructor for Studio 180 Design. Her program and trunk show is "Forensics of Quilting" where she will show how to visually break down the components of a block, to help understand that most blocks are easier than you think. Her quilts are always fun and really fantastic.

COLORADO CO. SENIOR CONNECTIONS COLUMBUS — Colorado County Senior Connections, a place for senior’s, 65 years or older, to socialize with others is held every first and third Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Stafford Opera House, Buddy Rau Room, at 425 Spring St. in Columbus. The event includes card games, board games, Bingo with prizes, coffee and tea, movies, lunch provided, educational speakers, field trips including trips to casinos and social gathering.

EL HOLDS FARMERS/COMMUNITY MARKET EAGLE LAKE - Eagle Lake holds its Farmers & Community Market every third Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in downtown Eagle Lake. WALDECK FOOD TRUCK CHANGES

WALDECK - The Central Texas Food Bank (CTFB) has decided to discontinue serving food as a drive-thru format. Now the Waldeck food truck will have food distribution as a walk-up method. Volunteers will distribute the food from tables. Every client needs to bring their own sturdy reusable bags and boxes. A few wagons will be furnished by CTFB, but if the client has their own wagon, please bring it. Waldeck food truck is on third Saturdays of each month from 10 to 11 a.m. The 2023 dates are: June 17, July 15, Aug. 19, Sept. 16, Oct. 21, Nov. 18 and Dec. 16.

STS. CYRIL & METHODIUS CELEBRATION DUBINA - The Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church will celebrate its 167th year Sunday, July 2 at the Dubina Community Hall in Dubina. The "Dubina Style" fried chicken and sausage dinner will begin serving at 11 a.m. Adult plates are $12. Adult take home plates trhough express to-go line. Sweepstakes drawing tickets are available for purchase. The drawing will be held Sunday, July 2 at 7 p.m. A country auction will begin at 1:30 p.m. Bingo will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Washer pitching tournament registration is 3 p.m. and tournament begins at 4 pm. Polka Mass will be held at 9 a.m. Free dance under the pavilion with polka and waltz music. Mark Halata & Texavia, and Lost Cause Band will play from noon to 7 p.m. There will be a antique and classic cars on site.

EAGLE LAKE FIREWORKS SHOW SLATED EAGLE LAKE -The 25th Annual Eagle Lake Fireworks Show will be held Monday, July 3 beginning at 9:15 p.m. at the usual location on Calhoun Road in Eagle Lake. LEGION TO HOLD ARTS/CRAFT SHOW WALLIS - The Wallis American Legion Post 200, located at 330 Legion Dr. in Wallis, will hold its 20th annual arts and craft show July 8 and 9 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The first 20 shoppers, both days, will receive a gift. Admission is $1 and hourly door prizes. Hamburgers and chopped barbecue beef on bun will be available for purchase as well as desserts and drinks. The event will include musical entertainment.
