ROUND ROCK — The Fayetteville High School baseball team made it to the state championship game with a win against Nazareth High School June 7 at Dell Diamond in Round Rock by a score of 4-0. The Lions scored early and were also able to score when it mattered in the later innings of the game.
“I told them today, you got to enjoy the moment and have fun”, said Fayetteville head baseball coach Clint Jaeger.
“If we’re not gonna have fun here, then what did we play all this year for? You got to enjoy it, but then you do have to focus. You have a job to do trying to accomplish your goal. They did a heck of a job. Guys have a great mentality right now and they’re just rolling, That twoout rally was huge. Our lineup is stacked one through nine, so we can start a rally anytime, any part of the inning. That proves it right there.”
Fayetteville second baseman Easton Jaeger, son of head coach Clint Jaeger, has made major contributions throughout his early tenure, “On the double, I just thought about a quote I heard,” Easton Jaeger said. “We got runners in scoring position and its a big moment, pressure’s not on you, it’s on the pitcher. He has to get out of it, so just stay calm and do your thing. It means a lot to play in the state tournament for my dad, especially with these players, because I’ve played with them since I was a little kid and I’ve grown up coming to the state tournament with my dad, even when we weren’t in it, so it just means a lot.”
Fayetteville scored their first run on a hit from Jaeger in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Lions didn’t score again until the top of the fifth inning due to a single from junior Keagan Supak that sent two runners in for a 3-0 scoreboard. Jaeger added to the total with a double in the same inning to make it 4-0. Fayetteville was able to hold Nazareth down with their sturdy defense in crunch time to seal a 4-0 win and a bid to the state championship game.
