As I sit this morning in front of my typewriter, I am enjoying a mug of bulletproof coffee. What is bulletproof coffee you may ask? For those who are unaware of this amazing creation, let me enlighten you. Bulletproof coffee is something you might want to try. Before going any further, let me say that if you are interested in bulletproof coffee, it is a good idea to research this topic for yourself. And, if you have any health issues, consult your doctor before drinking.
What is bulletproof coffee and where did it come from? Bulletproof coffee is made by adding butter and medium-chain triglyceride oil (MCT oil) to coffee. This breakfast coffee has been popularized in this country by Dave Asprey, an American entrepreneur, author, health advocate and bio-hacker. He found the recipe for bulletproof coffee while hiking in Tibet, and has turned this concoction into a money-making enterprise. His special brand of bulletproof coffee can be found in stores nationwide, but it is possible to make your own at home, for much less.
Why drink bulletproof coffee? Bulletproof coffee is said to promote weight loss and mental clarity. It invigorates the mind, eradicates mental fog, and the fats in bulletproof coffee make you feel full, enabling better control of your eating habits. The appetite control aspect of bulletproof coffee is a big help to those who practice intermittent fasting.
I choose to drink bulletproof coffee primarily because it is good for my brain. MCT oil enables your body to burn fat by producing ketones (chemicals produced by your liver to break down fats) which your brain then uses for fuel. Your brain typically uses glucose for fuel, but pre- fers ketones. I definitely sense a greater sharpness in my thinking on those days when I drink bulletproof coffee. For me, the weight loss benefits are a bonus. I do not drink bulletproof coffee to lose weight, although it does help keep extra pounds off. When I first started drinking bulletproof coffee, after about a month I was swimming in my pants and had to take my belt up two holes.
As good as bulletproof coffee is for your brain, I choose not to drink it every day. I typically make bulletproof coffee a few days each week. It’s best to do plenty of research regarding bulletproof coffee and find what works best for you.
How do you make bulletproof coffee? Start with high quality whole bean coffee (specialty coffee). I like coffee from Central and South America because beans from this region are almost always prepared using a washed process after harvesting. This makes cleaner coffee, in my opinion. And it goes without saying, you should always purchase organic coffee.
Grind your whole beans right before brewing, then brew one cup of coffee. Add 1 - 2 tablespoons of grassfed butter. I use Kerrygold Pure Irish Butter, available in most stores nationwide. Then add 1 - 3 tablespoons of MCT oil. This is a medium- chain triglyceride oil derived from coconut oil. Blend until fully mixed (I blend the heck out of it using my wife’s Vitamix blender – high speed for a full minute). If well mixed, coffee will taste better. Note – be careful using MCT oil. Start with one tablespoon, or less. As your body gets used to it, you can increase the amount. Using too much MCT oil can result in what some call disaster pants.
If you are drinking bulletproof coffee for the weight loss benefits, be extra careful to not add anything to your coffee or routine that might spark insulin production (don’t add sugar or milk, or eat breakfast – this will impede the fat burning effects of your coffee).
If you find that the fats and oils in bulletproof coffee upset your stomach, try using betaine as a supplement. Betaine offers digestive support and will help your body better handle bulletproof coffee. I like to take betaine with my evening meal instead of with my coffee.
If you need some mental clarity and fat-burning help, drink up. Bulletproof coffee is like a hug for your brain. Try hugging your brain today!
