COLUMBUS — Rock enthusiasts and professional geologists gathered at the home of Debbie Damon on Forest Street in Columbus to get a chance to snag petrified wood that sat in heaps mere feet away from the group.
Damon is giving petrified wood to be studied, admired or both to a special group of hunters known as rock hounds. This pile of rock is no ordinary rock pile. It is petrified wood that can range from 20 million years to 300 million years old.
Professional gatherers like Scott Singleton know the value of what Damon is parting with. There is always a rough diamond of petrified wood mixed in with fool's gold of the wood.
No matter the cost of the piece, petrified wood is a marvel to behold and is priceless in its history.
Damon, her brother Randy Kerr and two other relatives own the house known as the rock house in Columbus. Built in the 1940s, this house was made entirely out of petrified wood, A huge pile of petrified wood was amased and the remnants of the build lay in several long rows mostly covered by several feet of dirt.
