Letter to the Editor …

Last week I was driving down Travis Street in Columbus. Anytime I see the colors red or aqua, I always do a double take on what it might be. To my total shock, there was a young girl, maybe six or seven years old, on an aqua-colored electric scooter, not wearing a helmet. To make matters worse, she also had a young child, maybe three or four years old, sitting on the front handlebars and another younger child sitting on the back.

I had the right-of-way, but my gut feeling told me she was not going to stop or be able to come to a halt. What would have happened if there was an accident and these three children had been hurt critically or, worse, been killed? No helmets were worn by any of them. What is the current law regarding these motorized scooters and motorized skateboards? I see them all over town, buzzing around without a care in the world.

I had to stop to get my composure intact. However, I did drive up and down the neighborhood because I was going to bring it to the attention to city council.
