Columbus Education Foundation holds launch party

COLUMBUS - Colum -

COLUMBUS - Columbus Education Foundation has a fun event planned for Saturday, July 22, 4-6 p.m., at Hound Song Brewery in Columbus. The "Launch Party" is open to the community. Becca Edmis - ton, CEF committee chair, said, "We're calling it a 'Launch' since this is our first community-wide campaign to build scholarships. We'll have light refreshments and a cash bar serving beer, wine and soft drinks. There's no entry fee. All proceeds from a raffle and 'Cakes 'n More" auction will generate funds for CHS scholarships. Bring your friends and enoy the festivities!" CEF is a non-profit 501(c) (3) corporation founded to enhance educational opportunities for CISD students. Part of the mission is to create more scholarships for college and trade schools. With more community awareness, it's hopeful that even more scholarships will emerge through donations and memori als. This launch will share more about what's happening to boost our young people for opportunities beyond high school gradua tion.

CISD Board member, Robert Russell, commented on the work of CEF, "I am excited that schol - arships not only go to students attending academic colleges but also to students who are going to career or technical schools as well. This will have a great impact on a diverse population of students.

He continued, "With the IRS designation of 501(c)(3), the Foundation has the ability to accept contributions and donations that are tax-deductible to the donor. Then, the Foundation is able to invest these funds be - fore dispersing them to students. Even small donations can add up to make a huge difference for our students." Superintendent Jim Connor explained that prior to CEF, there was no easy "process" or system to handle donations for scholar - ships. He encouraged Thomas B. Hancher, MD and Patsy Hodge to create a non-profit organization independent of Columbus ISD. "CEF is helping our students get a head start on their career choices. CEF's work has created additional excitement among the students to apply for scholarships." Scott Leopold, CISD Chief Financial Officer added, "CEF has helped to level the playing field for college and trade school attendance for students."
