WALLIS - The Brazos Cougarettes suffered a beatdown to Hitchcock High School Jan. 17 at Cougars Gym in Wallis by a final score of 93-31. Hitchcock’s athleticism, shot-making, and pressure on defense won them this ball game.
“That’s the best team in the district,” said Brazos head girls basketball coach Griffin Clary.
“That’s the best team we’re gonna play this year. We held them to a 14-point game the first time we played them. That’s a really good basketball team. All accolades to them. They play really good basketball and we didn’t have an answer to their pressure.”
Brazos hung in for a good majority of the first quarter with an 11-10 score in favor of Hitchcock, then the Lady Bulldogs went on a 10-3 run to close the quarter with a 21-13 lead on a layup and two three-pointers. Senior Courgarettes guard Haiven Harris hit a step-back three under heavy pressure at the 6:45 mark in the second quarter to put it at 25-16 until Hitchcock responded with a a few layups, a couple threes, and a couple free throws to take a 41--26 advantage at halftime.
Hitchcock really stretched their lead in the third quarter with a bunch of steals and layups, most of them in transition and from their full court press to make the scoreboard read 61-29 at the end of the third quarter.
Brazos struggled to get the ball inbounds in the fourth quarter while Hitchcock continued to put on the their tight defense, resulting in mostly layups, three free throws, one jump shot, and one three-pointer en route to a 93-31 win.
