GIDDINGS — Bellville boys basketball took care of business Dec. 28. 2022, at Buffaloes Gym in Giddings with a win vs Wei- mar High School by a final score of 57-33. Bellville’s transition game was the bright spot in this matchup as they capitalized off Weimar’s turnovers and also hit a lot of shots. “Attitude and physicality,” said Bellville head boy’s basketball coach Mason Loiodice on the keys to victory.

“We have a lot of football guys and everybody’s tenacious. Once we’re really active on defense, I feel like we produce a lot more opportunities for ourselves offensively.”

Brahmas senior guard Brandon Ward had his jump shot going as well as his creativity on drives to the rim, cashing in 25 points for the outing. “Being a team player,” Ward said on what he tries to work on each game. “Do it together. No i’s, it’s all together.”

Weimar’s main focus is how they can maintain possession of the ball in order to run a productive offense. “We got to take pride in taking care of the basketball,” said Weimar head basketball coach Jakob Rehak. “We got too many turnovers. We did that last week against Brazos. Just way too many turnovers. We got to take care of the basketball more often and get better shots. That’s the biggest takeaway is valuing the basketball on every possession.”

The Wildcats started the game in a one-three-one half court defense that Bellville was able to get the best of with an 8-1 lead on a few short baskets and a fast-break layup. The Brahmas kept this pace with the help of two layups and a free throw from Ward to make it 15-4 at the end of the first quarter.

The Wildcats eventually cut the lead to 23-14 in the second quarter with a short basket and a layup. After a few made free throws from Bellville and one in the paint from Weimar guard Huxton Kloesel, Ward made a nice drive baseline for an and one play at the 2:26 mark just before Weimar had cut it within nine. Ward stayed hot with a three-pointer from the wing and an impressive left-handed drive down the baseline for a euro step layup en route to a 28-16 lead at halftime for the Brahmas.

Early in the third quarter, Bellville slightly stretched their lead with contributions from senior Ben Schaff on a three-pointer in the corner and two free throws with 4:40 on the clock to make it 37-21. A steal and layup from Ward, then a corner three-pointer from Brahmas junior guard Zach Leuschner gave his team a 48-28 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

Bellville didn’t give any wiggle room down the stretch and rolled to a 57-33 win.
