Popeye, the Sailor Man, was real! Popeye was inspired by a sailor named Frank Fiegle, a rough-andtumble man. He smoked a pipe while holding it to one side of his mouth.
It is said he got into so many fights, taking punches to his eye caused it to deform, people started to call him Pop-eye. He wore a sailor’s t-shirt and sailor’s cap.
He told tall tails to children of things he did, often loudly claiming spinach gave him invincible physical strength.
