SEALY — In Austin County, 10.4% of people live in poverty or are struggling financially. Education is truly the pathway out of poverty and instability. By providing students with the necessary school supplies, they are empowered to fully participate in their education, increasing their chances of achieving academic success and better economic opportunities in the future!
Most importantly, it helps to reduce the burden on families who are already struggling financially. With that being said, we were excited to give the students and their families what they needed to prepare for another great academic year.
The Back-to-School Health Fair was sponsored by the generosity of Woodmen Life of Sealy, the Bellville Lion's Club, and the Masons of Montgomery Chapter #106. The event was hosted by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service of Austin County, the Department of State Health Services of Austin County, and the Austin County Family and Consumer Sciences Advisory Board. On July 18, at Sealy High School, 475 youth and adults came through the doors. More than three hundred back -packs with school supplies were distributed to families with students registered in Austin County schools and Met Head Start. Also, families were provided with the opportunity to visit with twenty-nine vendors who provided a variety of screenings and family services at no cost. This event was more than just supporting families with supplies but also about ensuring equal access to education, fostering a sense of community support, and helping children reach their full potential despite their financial circumstances.
