2022 State Pecan Show results

The 2022 Texas State Pecan Show results were announced at the Texas Pecan Growers Association annual conference July 30.

The 2022 Texas State Pecan Show results were announced at the Texas Pecan Growers Association annual conference July 30.

There were 133 pecan samples entered by 51 individual growers from 25 different Texas counties.

The counties with the highest representation were Menard (16), San Saba (13), Washington (12), and Andrews (12).

Entries were judged by members of the USDA-ARS Pecan Breeding & Genetics Unit, including Dr. Warren Chatwin, Dr. Xianwang Wang, Dr. Angelyn Hilton, Keith Kubenka, Braden Tondre and Diana Beebe.

Austin County had three entries in the State Show, and all placed.

Placings are as follows:

•Grand Champion Native- Annie Wittner of Austin County

•Reserve Champion Native – Luedeker Farms of Austin County •1st Place Natives – Annie Wittner of Austin County

•2nd Place Natives - Luedeker Farms of Austin County

•3rd Place Choctaw- Linda Villarreal

•Grand Champion Commercial pecan was grown by Swift River Pecans, Caldwell County with a Waco variety.

•Reserve Champion Commercial was grown by Ronny Wells, Bell County with Cheyenne variety.

•Grand Champion for the classic and new pecan variety division was grown by Dan Bishop, Washington County with a Jackson variety.

•Reserve Champion in the division was grown by Jim Montes, El Paso County, Barton variety.

•Grand Champion Native Pecan was grown in Austin County by Annie Wittner.

•Reserve Champion Native was grown by Luedeker Farms, also in Austin County.

Be sure to save 50 pecans for this year’s 2023 crop to enter the Austin County Pecan Show.

Entries are due Nov. 27 by 4 p.m. to the Austin County Exten- sion Office.
