SCHULENBURG — Lady Wildcats volleyball took a loss to Goliad High School Aug. 17 at Shorthorns Gym in the Lady Horn Classic tournament. Both teams battled back and forth, then Goliad had just a couple more things go their way in the third set to win the match 2521, 18-25, 25-20. “We’re looking just for leadership,” said Weimar head volleyball coach Amanda Machicek.
“Which one’s gonna step up at the right time. Who we can get in what positions. We still don’t have our lineup set right now, so we’re just giving kids a chance.”
Weimar was down 18-14 in the first set and wasn't able to make up much ground as Goliad put their kill shots on display and the Lady Wildcats weren’t able to answer, resulting in a 25-21 set win for Goliad.
The second set was evenly matched all the way up until about the midpoint, then Weimar separated themselves with four points in a row to take a 20-13 lead, with two of those points being on errors from Goliad. A block from Weimar and a ball out of bounds from Goliad made it 23-16, which was followed by an illegal hit from Goliad and a kill by sophomore Janiyah Cooper to win the set 25-18.
The Lady Wildcats had the upper hand in the third set at 11-6 on a kill from junior outside hitter Chandley Tolbert, then Goliad stormed back with five points in a row to tie it at 11. The two teams traded punches for a while before Goliad started to pull away at 20-16, with two of those points coming from an ace and a ball in the net from Weimar. Two more kills and a tip ball won the set and match for Goliad at 25-20.
