CARMINE — The Round Top-Carmine High School volleyball team defeated Navasota High School in three sets Aug. 15 at Cubs Gym by a score of 25-20, 25-14, 25-15. As Round Top was projected to be one of the better teams in Class 1A, the team showed why with their high-powered offense, putting the ball down with force on the opposite side of the net. “This team’s just fun to watch,” said Round Top-Carmine head volleyball coach Catie Weishuhn.

“They’re super scrappy. We had a really good outing at the Columbus tournament. Just making sure we take care of our game and don’t give away too many points. This team is gonna be really fun to watch throughout the year.”

While the Cubettes are dominant on offense, they also have a sturdy defense, thanks in large part to senior libero Maggie Salinas. “As of right now, our tournaments and games have gone really well,” Salinas said. “I have a lot of expectations from our team to do really well and go really far in the playoffs. Hopefully we make it to state.”

The first set was pretty even ly matched until later on, when Round Top went on a run of five- straight points to make it 20-14, mostly from kills. The Cubettes then won the set 25-20 with all kills throughout the rest of the set.

Round Top took control of the second set from the very beginning and a ball out of bounds from Navasota made it 7-3. The black and gold then put it at 14-8 with a couple more kills and a ball in the net from Navasota.

Round Top went on another five- point streak for a 21-9 scoreboard on a kill from Tess Eilers. Navasota scored a few points in a row of their own towards the end of the set, but the Cubettes were able to close it out at 25-14 with a ball out of bounds from the Lady Rattlers.

Navasota didn’t back down and fought hard to stay in the third set until Round Top stretched their lead to 14-7, with some of the points coming from two balls in the net by Navasota and a dig that turned into a kill for Salinas. Two kills in a row from Eilers put the score at 21-13, then two more consecutive kills won the set and match for Round Top at 25-15.
