EAGLE LAKE — Rails-to-Trails Conservancy was the program at the Eagle Lake Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet last Saturday night at the Eagle Lake Community Center in Eagle Lake.
Rails-to-Trails Conservancy is a national rail-trail movement that began in the Midwest in the 1960s with an idea to convert abandoned or unused rail corridors, which people were already beginning to walk on anyway, into more attractive and accessible trails ford public use.
The idea began to spread, and now over 21,000 miles of rail- trails can be found in America; to date, 338 of those miles are in Texas.
Eagle Lake has joined with a group of other small communities to get started on its own trail which will eventually run from Eagle Lake to Fulshear for about 31 miles of hiking and biking opportunities.
Eagle Lake stands to benefit economically as well as aesthetically from the development of the trail.
The evening included dinner and dessert catered by Lamberto’s Main Street Italian Restaurant located in Eagle Lake, a silent auction and a drawing.
