LA GRANGE — The Founders Park located on the courthouse square is a small “pocket” park located next to the Fayette County Clerk's office. Patsy Creed donated the land for the park which was dedicated in September 2012. The donation was made in order for a small park to be created across from the courthouse to honor and tell the story of prominent Fayette County pioneer settlers.
Within the park, you will see the millstone used by the Rabb Family as well as profiles located on memorial plaques that line the park's perimeter. These profiles, created by Kathy Carter, were also published in 2012 in the Fayette County Record “Footprints of Fayette” articles.
Within the park are profiles of the following men and women: David W. Breeding, William Brookfield, Asa Hill, James S.
Lester, Ayelett Buckner, James Lyons, Jesse Burnam, Edward Manton, Sylvanus Castleman, John Henry Moore, Kesiah Crier, William Rabb, John Dancy, Joel Walter Robison, Nicholas Dawson, James Ross, William Mosby Eastland, Nathaniel Faison, Zadock Woods, Christian Wertzner, Frederick Grasmeyer.
Current renovations of the park have included a new location for the Fayette County Historical Commission which will be opening the office on the first of February. There are now public restrooms located in the park. The Historical Commission will be offering tours of the courthouse by appointment and on select Saturday mornings starting this month.
Stop by while in La Grange to learn more about the people who helped make Fayette County such a great place to live. You can also read the history of the county by following along the History Walk that surrounds the Courthouse and enjoy the local Farmer’s Market and other activities on the square each Saturday thanks in part to the City of La Grange Main Street Program.
The Fayette County Historical Commission is a group of volunteers who the Fayette County Commissioners Court has commissioned. The Texas Legislature authorized the establishment of County Historical Commissions to assist county commissioner’s courts and the Texas Historical Commission in the preservation of our historic and cultural resources. The mission of each county historical commission is to preserve, protect and promote these resources.
As a political subdivision, CHCs serve as primary points of contact for individuals who need more information about particular aspects of history and historic sites in Texas. Please note that CHC activity levels vary from county to county based on those individuals who volunteer their time and efforts to meet the mission of our Fayette County Historical Commission.
Courtesy of the City of La Grange, there is WiFi available in the park as well as tables and chairs to sit and refresh yourself.
