FAYETTEVILLE - Lady Horns volleyball went into Lions Gym Aug. 29 and collected a victory against Fayetteville High School by sweep with a final score of 25-7, 25-11, 25-15. Schulenburg had all parts of their offense working throughout the match that was too much for Fayetteville to handle. "Just trying to minimize some of our mistakes," said Schulenburg head volleyball coach Donald Zapalac.

"We want to clean up some of those at times. Fayetteville had to throw a different lineup out there today. He was missing a couple kids again. He's got three freshmen out there, so they're not used to the speed of the game and they had to adjust a little bit. We were just trying to clean up our side of it." Schulenburg senior middle blocker Meredith Magliolo grabbed 12 kills for the night and is one of the Lady Horns' better hitters on the team. "I want to make sure that I go out every game with a good, aggressive mindset," Magliolo said. "That I'm staying positive throughout all the ups and downs of volleyball because there's a lot of it. I just want to take it one game at a time, one step at a time, because it's a long process to get to state. Just making sure that we're taking it one step at a time."

Fayetteville looks to make adjustments and get over the hump of the .500 mark. "There's gonna be a learning curve," said Fayetteville head volleyball coach Clint Jaeger. "A lot of new faces. Not only working with their team chemistry on the court, but also getting used to a higher level of volleyball. Junior high is not high school, especially when you're playing teams like Schulenburg. They're really good. I think they're starting to get the experience and kind of work out that chemistry. The record doesn't show it, but I think we're improving." Schulenburg started the first set with a 14-3 lead and kept a similar margin throughout the set as Fayetteville only scored four more points, resulting in the Lady Horns cruising to a 25-7 set win, mostly on kills.

The second set was closer as a kill from Fayetteville senior outside hitter Kayme Schley tied it at six, then Schulenburg scored eight points in a row to take a 14-6 lead, which included two kills and a block from Magliolo. A tip ball by Lady Horns junior outside hitter Emmrie Marx put it at 20-9 before Schulenburg sophomore hitter Reagan Dusek added a set-winning kill for a score of 25-11.

Fayetteville battled once again in third set and even tied it at 10 on a ball out of bounds from Schulenburg. Two kills from the Lady Horns and an ace from Schulenburg senior libero Kieryn Adams made it 13-10. Schulenburg then scored eight consecutive points with four of those points coming from Magliolo on three kills and one block. A ball in the net from Fayetteville and one more kill from Marx won the set and match for Schulenburg at 25-15.
