Columbus football steals road win at La Grange with big second half

LA GRANGE – The Columbus High School football team survived a tough fight from La Grange High School Sept. 1 at Leopards Field

LA GRANGE — The Columbus High School football team survived a tough fight from La Grange High School Sept. 1 at Leopards Field with a big second half and a final score of 63-28 in favor of the Cardinals. A high-scoring first half and a relatively close score going into halftime led to Columbus making adjustments and putting their loaded offense on display to ultimately secure the win. "For us, there's always gonna be tweaks," said Columbus head football coach Matt Schobel.

"There's always gonna be game plan things we're gonna do. We're always looking to put our players in the best position to be successful and put together the puzzle the best way we can. Offense, defense, and special teams. The kids are playing hard and we definitely have things to work on. Credit to La Grange. They did some things with their scheme offensively that it's a challenge to defend and I think they're gonna be a good team." Columbus senior running back Ty'Vone Whitehead had a monster game with six total touchdowns and used his quickness equipped with speed to storm the Cardinals to victory. "Just staying focused at practice and having a good practice all week," Whitehead said. "Making sure my line's blocking right, finding my gaps in the hole, that's really it. Big thank you to my oline tonight for a big game." La Grange was much improved from week one and it looks as though this team is only going to get better. "I thought just our overall tempo improved," said La Grange head football coach Kyle Cooper. "I felt like we did some good things. It helps when there's not one of the top defensive lineman in the state up there, but obviously still a very good football team. I told our kids all week football's a game of inches, so we got to find those inches. People call it timing, but really it is inches. You're looking at doing things just right so that all those inches come together in the right timing. I thought we did that in certain phases of the game. Offensively, I thought we found some inches there. Did some things better on special teams, but still things to address in all phases." Columbus put the opening points on the board early in the first quarter on a pass from 2025 Baylor football commit Adam Schobel to senior wide receiver Jackson Hancock as Schobel rolled out for a 38-yarder

and a 7-0 lead. Whitehead added an eight-yard touchdown a few min - utes later, then La Grange scored a two-yard touchdown on a run up the middle from senior fullback Austin Roe that was answered by a kickoff return by Columbus' Hancock for 90 yards and a 21-7 lead, all within the final minute of the first quarter.

Leopards senior wide receiver Nate Scott caught a 39-yard touch - down pass across the middle to start the second quarter before Whitehead raced for another touchdown to put it at 28-14. Whitehead proceeded to punch in his third score of the out - ing on a one yard run, which led to a 29-yard touchdown catch for La Grange's Scott down the Leopards sideline as time expired in the first half to cut the deficit to 35-21.

La Grange junior running back Le'Kayvion Broussard made it 3528 on a short touchdown run at the 7:55 mark in the third quarter, then La Grange didn't score for the rest of the game and Columbus added three more touchdowns from White - head and one more from Hancock to cruise to a 63-28 victory.
