BELLVILLE — The Bellville High School volleyball team defeated Giddings High School at Brah- mas Gym Sept. 5 by a final score of 25-16, 19-25, 25-15, 25-22. Bellville dominated the first set and Giddings answered, but the Brahmanettes were able to hang on with their clutch gene and put down timely points. “Giddings came here loaded for bear,” said Bellville head volleyball coach Susan Brewer.

“I thought they were very active, I thought they were very energetic, had a lot of effort, and played a real solid game. They had a couple of weapons. They did a really good job. Kudos to their team. I thought they worked their tail off on defense, so I thought they did a nice job. After the first game, I felt like we got a little bit complacent. On my part, I was changing a few things up, trying a couple little different things, but still not an excuse. I felt like we got just a little bit complacent, then we had to work a little harder to comeback, so that’s good for us. We might need that in the future. I was proud of the effort the girls gave to come back and play a little bit better ball.”

Junior outside hitter Sydney McKay is the leader on offense and showed up for the duration of the game with big-time kills. McKay also plays for the Houston Juniors 17 Elite club team. “Playing in Houston year round and getting as many reps as I do there, it helps me here and it helps me help other people,” McKay said. “I think reps just help me so much. It’s always reps. I do lessons and I think just having a ball in my hands helps a lot.”

Bellville took a huge 16-3 lead in the first set and Giddings barely cut into the lead with a five-point streak toward the end of the set, but it wasn’t enough as the Brahmanettes settled back in and won the set 2515 with the last point being on a kill from McKay.

Two balls out of bounds in a row from Bellville gave Giddings a 10-5 lead early in the second set. The Brahmanettes went on to score four-consecutive points and make it 10-9, forcing Giddings to call a timeout. Bellville then called a timeout of their own due to six unanswered points from the Lady Buffaloes. Bellville climbed back in it with a ball out of bounds from Giddings to make it 18-14 and even put it at 20-17 on another ball out of bounds from Giddings, then a kill and an ace from Giddings followed by a ball in the net from Bellville won the Lady Buffaloes the set 25-19.

The third set was evenly matched to start until Bellville pulled away as the set went on. Bellville made it 17-11 on a kill from McKay before three more kills in a row put it at 20-13 and forced Giddings to call a timeout. Giddings responded out of the break with a kill, then two kills from Bellville and a ball in the net from the Lady Buffaloes awarded Bellville the set at 25-15.

The fourth and final set was neck- and neck for it’s majority until a tip ball from Bellville senior Sarah Lischka put the scoreboard at 22-18 in favor of the Brahmanettes. Giddings scored two points in a row and Bellville put the icing on the cake with a kill from sophomore Kristen Luce to win the set and match at 2520.
