SCHULENBURG — The Schulenburg High School volleyball team put on a strong showing Sept. 26 at Shorthorns Gym by taking down Louise High School with a final score of 25-5, 25-4, 25-14. Louise was overmatched by the Lady Horns depth and skill as Schulenburg powered through this one from the very beginning.
“We’re hoping not to be in cruise control," said Schulenburg head volleyball coach Donald Zapalac.
"Sometimes, we do look like it. We want to stay a little more
focused. Try to clean up our side of the net. That's what we're fo cusing on right now. I think we’re making a big push, I think we're really improving, getting to play some schools our size for once now. Earlier in the season, we don't play a lot of 2A schools, so it helps us focus on what we need to get better at."
Junior outside hitter Emmrie Marx knocked down seven kills for the outing and has been one of the leaders in kills all season. "It feels good," Marx said on the win. “I like to talk about it as a
team, though. I don't like to say that I'm, you know, the kill lead - er. I like to think of it as a team thing and that’s how we get our kill streak and stuff."
Marx put down a kill in the first set to make it 16-5, then Schulenburg went on to score the next nine points, which includ ed three aces and another kill from Marx to win the set 25-5. After an ace in the second set from the Lady Horns, Louise tal lied a point on a serve in the net from Schulenburg to tie it at one. Schulenburg followed that up with 11 consecutive points and four aces, all aces coming from senior libero Kieryn Adams.
A serve out of bounds from the Lady Horns, a block from Louise, and another ball out of bounds from Schulenburg put it at 13-4 and the Lady Horns responded by scoring the rest
of the points for the set at 25-4. The third set was much closer, a t
least at the start, as Louise tied it at nine with and illegal hit from
Schulenburg. Two balls in the
net from Louise and two aces from Schulenburg made it 13-9,
then Schulenburg notched seven points in row with four of them being kills from senior outside hitter Jessalyn Gipson. A kill from senior middle hitter Brooke Redding turned it into a 23-13 ball game before a serve out of bounds from Louise won the set and match for Schulenburg at 2514.
