SCHULENBURG — Schulenburg football won their third game of the season Sept. 29 at Shorthorns Field by defeating Hearne High School with a final score of 10-0. The Shorthorns defense was stellar and they mustered just enough offense to seal a win on homecoming night. “We’re not turned around yet,” said Schulenburg head football coach Luke Hobbs.
“We’re just in the right direction. I sure hope this isn’t our plateau. We’re pushing in the right direction, the kids practice hard every day. I mean, if people want to come out and watch us practice, you’ll be impressed with them in practice just like you are in games. If you want to come watch them lift weights, they lift weights like its fourth and one. It’s a process. We don’t just show up on Fridays and play tough ’til the buzzer and beat good teams like Thorndale and Hearne. We do it everyday in practice. The kids are getting better in the classroom. It’s just real live. It’s electric in the hallways. Things are just going good and it’s just starting in the right direction. We’re not turned around yet, we’re just heading in the right direction I feel like.”
Shorthorns junior quarterback Aaron Janecek rushed the ball 24 times for 98 yards and scored the only touchdown of the game. “I couldn’t do anything without my line,” Janecek said. “My line leads me everywhere I go. They give me every big run I have.”
After a scoreless first quarter, Schulenburg senior linebacker Bryce Stoever made an interception with 11:47 to go in the second quarter and took the ball down to Hearne 12 yard line. This was followed by Janecek’s touchdown on a quarterback sneak up the middle for three yards and a 7-0 lead. Schulenburg didn’t score again until the 5:08 mark in the third quarter with a 25 yard field goal from se-nior kicker Brycen Schramek.
A defensive onslaught took place for the rest of the game as both sides didn’t allow much of anything, resulting in Schulenburg taking a knee in the final minute and capturing a 10-victory.
