COLUMBUS — The Columbus High School football team tacked it on in the fourth quarter to pull away with a 42-14 victory Oct. 6 at Cardinals Field against Hallettsville High School. It was a close game until the fourth quarter when Columbus went on a scoring spree and scored 21 points in the quarter. “Motivating these guys, it’s not hard to motivate them,” said Columbus head football coach Matt Schobel.

“Our kids play hard and real proud of the way they came out today. Credit to Hallettsville. Those guys are competitors and they're gonna fight for four quar ters. I was proud that our kids stayed the course and we were able to maybe wear them down a little bit in the second half. We pulled away late, but a lot of credit to Hallettsville.”

Junior Columbus quarterback and Baylor football commit Adam Schobel was tossing it all over the field, as he usually does, in order to help secure the victory for his team. “Keep competing in games,” Schobel said on what he looks forward to the rest of the year. “Games like this when it's tight and we have to fight. That fired me up. Our team, we showed that we can play in big games like this. Going into next week with Hitchcock, they’re gonna be a good team, so we just got to keep working and keep getting better.”

Columbus had a 7-0 lead after the first quarter with an 11 yard touchdown from senior running back Ty’Vone Whitehead at the 5:38 mark. Schobel then tossed a 56 yard heave for a touchdown at the beginning of the second quarter. Hallettsville responded with a four yard score, then Columbus answered right back for 28 yards on a pass from Schobel to receiver Jackson Hancock to take a 21-7 lead at halftime.

A scoreless third quarter for Columbus allowed Hallettsville to gain some ground just before the end of the quarter with a quarterback sneak at the goal line from junior quarterback Jorian Wilson. Hallettsville didn’t score again and the Cardinals went on to reach the end zone three more times, all on touchdowns from Whitehead of three yards, 19 yards, and two yards to ensure a 42-14 win.
