Author Elaine Thomas to give interview tips

WEIMAR – Remember the days when phones were on party lines, the weather was forecast by a red sky in the morning or a ring around moon, and we got our news at gatherings on the front porch or the church picnic?

WEIMAR — Remember the days when phones were on party lines, the weather was forecast by a red sky in the morning or a ring around moon, and we got our news at gatherings on the front porch or the church picnic?

Author Elaine Thomas is a collector of stories that feature such memories, and she will be at the Weimar Public Library at 10 a.m.

on Friday, Oct. 27 to show you how to save your stories and your family history.

Thomas, who is a prolific non-fiction writer, will inspire us to save our family histories through useful tips and techniques that she has developed through years of trial and error.

“Great interviews aren’t the result of serendipity and intuition, but rather the result of careful planning and good journalistic habits,” says Thomas.

Through the subtle art of the interview, Thomas will guide participants in interviewing and recording the stories of family members, neighbors, and friends. She will explain putting a person at ease, questioning techniques, and conducting interviews with people of various walks of life. She encourages attendees to bring any family recordings they may already possess to the program.

Thomas has written hundreds of feature stories, columns, and personal profiles. The author of five books, she also has contributed to anthologies such as Chicken Soup for the Soul, and Hope and Resilience in the Time of COVID. Her recent book awards include a Will Rogers Medallion for Veterans’ Voices and Home Front Memories and an independent Publisher award for Saddles and Service. She also has been recognized with Texas and national newspaper awards, as well as by the International Society of Family History Writers and Editors.

The program, sponsored by Friends of the Weimar Public Library is free. Please RSVP to the Weimar Public Library at 979-- 725-6608.
