ROUND TOP — The Round Top-Carmine High School volleyball team shut out Fayettevlle High School in straight sets Oct. 10 at Lions Gym by a final score of 25-9, 25-12, 25-12. The Cubettes were dominant on offense and took advantage of their towering athleticism. “It’s just always a fun and tough place to play,” said Round Top-Carmine head volleyball coach Catie Weishuhn.
“Obviously district rivals and the best competition in district, so it’s nice to come here and take care of business against a well-coached team. It’s the best competition we face in a strong period of time, so we were gonna take care of business. Make sure that we can still play volleyball the way it needs to be played.”
Cubettes outside hitter Tess Eilers has been one of the leaders on offense all year and showed up with nine kills, also tallying 13 digs on the defensive end. “I try to keep a positive attitude and try to just play my best on every game,” Eilers said. “Just try to play at our level and keep my head up.”
Fayetteville has an overall record below .500, but they still boast a 5-2 record in district play. “They’re just strong all around,” said Fayetteville head volleyball coach Clint Jaeger. “There’s not too many weaknesses over there, whether it’s offensively or defensively. They just got strength in numbers. They all play really well. Not one dominant player is going to take over a game. They all do it as a team together. It’s complement to them. They’re a pretty solid team. It was tough for us to put any balls away. We felt we did okay defensively given that we felt we were on, basically, defense and scramble mode the whole night. The scores didn’t show it because Round Top played really well and didn’t give us any free points, but I felt like we did better than the first time we played them. It’s constantly just trying to improve. That’s all you can do. Play from point to point and don’t worry about the score.”
Round Top dominated the first set and won 25-9 with tons of offense that made it hard for Fayetteville to stop. Keeping balls up on defense and the usual power from the outside hitters was put on display as the Cubettes cruised throughout the entire set.
The black and gold started off on a positive note in the second set as well and had a big lead of 21-10 after a tip ball from Eilers.
Another tip ball and a kill, both from Eilers, made way for two more kills from Round Top and a 25-12 set victory.
Round Top had a 6-1 advantage in the third set after a tip ball and Fayetteville answered with a point and a kill from senior outside hitter Kayme Schley to put it at 6-3. The Cubettes also capitalized on Fayetteville’s mistakes as the Lady Lions knocked to balls out of bounds in a row, which made Round Top go ahead 104. The Cubettes then scored six points in a row with a few kills and a few mistakes from Fayetteville and took a 16-6 advantage.
A kill from Round Top’s Kaysie Ward eventually made it 19-9 before another kill from Ward, an ace, and a couple more kills mixed in won Round Top the set and match at 25-12.
