ROUND TOP — Cubettes volleyball smoked McDade High School Oct. 24 at Cubs Gym by a final score of 25-6, 25-17, 25-9. The sweep consisted of Carmine taking advantage of their skill and executing on offense to overpower a McDade team that just couldn't hang with the Cubettes on senior night. "It's a nice night when you can celebrate six kiddos who have done a lot for your program," said Round Top-Carmine head volleyball coach Catie Weishuhn.
"Super proud of them. Anytime you can celebrate those kids, it makes it special. We got to take care of the ball. We made a lot of errors in that second set, which doesn't leave me super happy with the way the game ended, but we've got some time to practice and hopefully that takes us into the playoffs strong." One of the recognized seniors, Mallory Krause, has been an essential part to Round Top's success all year and tossed up 18 assists for the outing. "Since this was our last game, it was really hard for us," Krause said. "We really played our best and really worked well as a team." A tip ball from Round Top's Kaysie Ward put her squad ahead 4-0 to start the first set, then the Cubettes went on a tear of eight straight points to make it 12-2. Carmine went on another streak of nine points that consisted of a tip ball from Krause and four aces from Jill Eilers. The Cubettes capitalized on Mc-Dade's mistakes towards the end of the set with balls in the net and out of bounds to capture the set 25-6.
A much closer second set led to a tie at 14 on a kill from McDade as both teams traded points. Round Top followed up a close score by pulling away with nine points in a row for a 23-14 scoreboard, mostly on kills and aces with three of the kills coming from outside hitter Tess Eilers, who is the twin sister of Jill Eilers. A kill and an ace for the last two points won the Cubettes the second set 25-17.
Carmine cruised again in the third set with a 9-0 start and three of those points coming on aces from Krause. They continued to dominate with a 15-1 lead, which included two more kills from Tess Eilers and an ace from Kim Rohde. A kill from Krause put it at 20-5 before Mc-Dade made more errors and the Cubettes closed out the set and match 25-9 on two aces and a mishit from McDade for the last point.
