COLUMBUS — A grateful group of “Girl Friends” recently received a check from the Columbus Lions Club. The gift from the Lions was to help fund their continuing work with third and fourth-grade girls who attend the Boys and Girls Club of Champion Valley.
The Girl Friends are a small group of retired professional women whose mission is to provide enriching experiences that encourage young girls to become responsible, confident and pro ductive young women.
The program was begun three years ago and has provided such diverse programs as a trip to a live theatre performance in Brenham, a personal meeting with the mayor and assistant police chief, an afternoon English tea party, lessons in photography, a spelling bee and a visit to a horse farm.
The group meets on Wednesdays after school.
Upcoming meetings will include cooking lessons from a well-known chef and field trips to learn about medical professions.
The program has been so well received that a similar program has been developed at the Weimar Boys and Girls Club.
