YOAKUM - Brahmanette volleyball’s playoff run was cut short Nov. 7 at Yoakum High School after being defeated by Wimberley High School with a final score of 22-25, 20-25, 23-25.
This was a game that could’ve gone either way as each set went down to the wire. Wimberley was able to come out on top with their sturdy defense and putting the ball down on the opposite side of the net when it mattered most. "Basically, I felt like there was a little too much hype in the match at the very beginning,” said Bellville head volleyball coach Susan Brewer.
"We kind of didn't really get into our groove of what we like to do. The first set went by really fast. We didn't serve as well as I hoped that we would've. Settled down a little bit in the second one.
Defensively, I thought they ran some things very quick. I have to give them the utmost respect. Wimberley did a really nice job. When we shut down one, we opened up another. Third game, I thought we had an opportunity to get back in there and make our run and steal that game. It just didn't work out for us. You got to do the basic things right. You got to do them solid. We just didn't do as good a job tonight as Wimberley did. I thought they did a nice job."
The two teams traded points to start the first set for a tie score at 14-14 until Wimberley separated themselves with five consecutive points and a 19-14 lead after a ball out of bounds from Bellville to go along with a block, kill, and ace leading up to it. Bellville called timeout after a tip ball from the Lady Texans and a 21-16 advantage. Bellville was able to make up ground and put it at 23-22 after a ball out of bounds from Wimberley, then two kills in a row from Wimberley won them the set 25-22.
The Lady Texans jumped out to an 11-3 second set lead after a handful of kills and a couple tip balls. A kill from Bellville junior outside hitter Sydney McKay made it 16-9 in favor of Wim berley as they kept their big lead, then a trading of kills from Wimberley junior outside hitter Laney Hennessee and Bellville's McKay made for a 21-16 scoreboard. The Brahmanettes continued to creep back in it with a tip ball and and a ball in the net from Wimberley at 21-18, then two kills in a row from the Lady Texans won them the set 25-20.
The third set was a back and forth battle again for both teams, except this time it was for the entirety of the set. The biggest lead Wimberley had in this set was at 22-18 after three points in a row on two kills and a ball out of bounds from Bellville. A kill from Bellville sopho - more Ella Burnett made it 2322 in favor of the Brahmanettes and Wimberley called a timeout, which was followed by a block from Wimberley and two balls in the net from Bellville to win the set and match for the Lady Tex- ans 25-23.
