COLUMBUS — Columbus boys basketball took a tough loss Tuesday Nov. 14 at the Marley Giddens Center in Columbus as they were defeated by Columbia High School with a final score of 60-44.
Columbus had a four point lead at halftime, then Columbia came out guns blazing in the second half with their defense, resulting in a lot of fast break points.
“We just got to take care of the ball,” said Columbus head boys basketball coach Troy Bohac.
“We got to keep it together.
This is our first game and ev erything without football guys. We’re a good group, even with the guys we got. We just got to keep on battling and play as a team and limit the turnovers.”
The Cardinals made an and one basket at the four second mark in the first quarter and made the free throw to take a 14-10 lead after the first quar ter. Columbia battled back and made a strong jump step to the rim for a basket and foul play of their own to go ahead 15-14 with four and a half minutes to go in the second quarter af ter missing the free throw. As both teams had a free throw fest, a put back layup from senior forward Trevor Berger, and a couple lay ups from Columbia, the Cardinals hit a buzzer beater at the half on a rebound and shot in mid air from near the top of the key to take a 25-21 lead at halftime.
Berger hit a three pointer to go ahead 28-24 in the third quarter and the Elmos caught fire a little later and took a 3831 advantage on a fast break layup with 2:13 to play. Co lumbia hit another fast break layup towards the end of the quarter and Columbus re sponded with a layup of their own to result in a 42-37 ball game in favor of Columbia at the end of the third quarter.
Columbia held on to their lead in the fourth quarter and even stretched it out by going ahead 54-42 at the 2:45 mark after a put back layup, then followed it with a few more fast break layups to eventually win comfortably 60-44.
