SCHULENBURG - Schulenburg and its proud citizens will celebrate
their 150-year birthday on Saturday, Dec. 2 from noon to 9 p.m. in downtown Schulenburg. The afternoon will be filled with a contest for the best chili and chicken noodle soup in the area, Santa in the park, a corn hole tournament and a ses -
quicentennial plaque reveal.
It is all topped off with a lighted Christmas parade.
The great city of Schulenburg was founded in 1873 after the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway built a railroad through the area. It be- came home to Germans, Czechs and Austrians who had been living in the area for several decades before. It was granted a post office soon after. A cottonseed crushing plant, a lum beryard, a planing mill, a sash and door factory, and a cotton gin sprang up along with a population of 1,000 citizens, two churches, a bank, schools, 13 general stores and four saloons.
A lot has happened in the 150 years leading up to the festive celebration. Opening ceremonies will be at noon
with keynote speakers.
