WEIMAR — Fayetteville boy’s basketball traveled to Weimar High School Nov. 28 to take on the Wildcats at Wildcats Gym in Weimar and went home with a win by a final score of 70-46. This was a close game all the way until the fourth quarter when the Lions went on a scoring tear due to their feisty defense and fast break offense to secure a big win.

"Weimar came out and played really well,” said Fayetteville head boy’s basketball coach Jake Diggs.

"Especially after just one day of practice from football. We had a lot of open shots in that first half, we just didn't get it to fall. Missed a whole bunch of free throws. I didn’t hate how we were playing in that first half, shots just weren't falling for us. Second half, they came out and hit two big threes in a row and then hit that elbow shot for a 8-0 run. Actually got the lead on us. Then we were able to call timeout, calm down a little bit, go back to what we were doing, and finally forced a few turnovers. Then shots started falling for us." Fayetteville senior guard Keagan Supak logged 22 points for the night and can pretty much do it all on the basketball court. "Just trying to get something started,” Supak said. "We started off a little slow, but then once we start working together, start playing as a team, start getting some things rolling, get some more shots off, open shots, and then try to speed them up and get ahead." Weimar is very much improved this year and looks like a team that can make some noise in the tri-county area. "Fayetteville, they’re a great team,” said Weimar head basketball coach Jakob Rehak. “My biggest thing, we had to try to stop their fast break. They are really good getting the ball out on the court. They were shooting the three ball really well. I thought for the first three quarters, we played a hell of a game. Other than that, it got away from us at the very end, but I'm very proud of how we played tonight.”

Fayetteville started the game with an 8-3 lead after a three pointer from the wing by junior Brody Dooley. Weimar quickly bounced back and made it 12-9 after a three pointer, which was followed by a floater in the middle of the paint by the Wildcats in the last few seconds of the quarter for a 17-14 scoreboard in favor of Fayetteville at the end of the first quarter.

Both teams went back and forth in the second quarter and Fayetteville had a lead as big as six when senior Jake Kubala made a put back layup at the front of the basket to take a 3125 advantage with just over a minute to play. Weimar made a tough, contested layup before Fayetteville responded with a layup of their own to make it 33-27 at halftime.

The Wildcats hit two threes in a row at the beginning of the third quarter and also hit a jumper to eventually surge ahead 35-33 with about six minutes to go. After trading a few baskets, Fayetteville snatched the lead back with a fast break layup from Supak, a three from junior Chance Konvicka, and another fast break layup from junior Lawson Fritsch to put the score at 45-37 at the end of the third quarter.

Fayetteville broke the game open in the fourth quarter with a bunch of different kinds of baskets, including a bunch of layups and a couple threes to make it 56-40. Supak then made a nice euro step move for an and one basket and hit the free throw for a 59-40 scoreboard at the 4:13 mark. Fayetteville didn't let up for the rest of the game and cruised to a 70-46 victory.
