EDNA — A mother’s worst fears were realized when her daughter was found stabbed to death lying in a bathtub on Dec. 5 in their Edna home. The victim, Lizbeth Medina, was an Edna High School cheerleader. Her mother made the discovery.
The suspect, Rafael Govea Romero, 23, of Schulenburg, is an illegal alien who overstayed his visa and had previously been charged with a Schulenburg burglary of a habitat of which he was out on a five-year deferred adjudication on probation.
Romero was arrested in Schulenburg after evidence linked him to the murder. He was traced to Schulenburg where he has been living just outside the city limits. Edna Police, Schulenburg PD, Fayette County Sheriff's Office and the Texas Rangers took Romero into custody off FM 2672 in Schulenburg. He was arrested without incident and placed in jail on a $2 million bond. Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed a detainer on Romero.
To date, there has not been a motive for the killing or if Romero knew Medina prior to her death.
