Weimar head softball coach Roger Maupin was recently awarded with the Texas Softball Coach of the Year honor from the NFHS after leading his team to a state championship win last May.
It is the Wildcats’ sixth state title in school history and the third state tournament appearance in a row under Maupin. “One of the things we talk about is team success brings individual awards,” said Maupin.
“That’s kind of the theme that we talk about all the time. This is no different. It took a lot of girls to make really big plays. It wasn’t one or two girls. That’s what we talk about all the time is team effort. Been fortunate we have some girls who bought in to what we’re talking about and they made a lot of big plays. We had to make a lot of big plays. In order to be successful, you got to make big plays and you got to win close games.”
Maupin led Weimar to a 39-71 record in the ’22-’23 season and took down Crawford in a ’21-’22 rematch of the state semifinal, then beat Como-Pickton to earn the title at University of Texas’ Red & Charline McCombs Field.
“We had that seven day stretch where we had five games and two walk-offs,” Maupin continued.
“That doesn’t happen much.”
Weimar softball is expected to make another run at the state title next spring under Maupin’s leadership and even though they had current Colorado State University softball player Reagan Wick on the mound for the majority of the outings, this team was able to put the bat on the ball, especially in clutch moments and they have a ton of returners eyeing a repeat for the state crown.
