Fayette County Attorney Peggy Supak announces her decision to not seek re-election. “This decision not to seek re-election was difficult and not taken lightly but is due to family and individual health issues along with the growing demands of the County Attorney’s Of- fice.
The felony caseload has more than tripled since I took office. I was elected in 2004 upon the retirement of my pre- decessor, John W. Wied, and took office on Jan. 1, 2005. I was re-elected in 2009, 2013, 2017, and 2021 and will complete 32 years of service upon expiration of my current term on Dec. 31, 2024,” said Supak.
Supak added, Assistant County At- torney James Herbrich has filed for the office. In my experience, assistant posi tions are often used by attorneys needing experience as a stepping stone to jobs elsewhere. That is not the case with Mr. Herbrich. When elected, I called on James as he was serving as Assistant District Attorney in Victoria and asked him to come home, just as I had done in 1993 after seven years of Houston practice. He did so without hesitation and has served as Assistant County Attorney for the past 19 years. He is a most competent and dedicated attorney who has earned the unqualified respect of the judicia ry, law enforcement, attorneys, and the peaceable and law-abiding citizens of Fayette County. It is time for me to step aside and allow him to set the future course of policy and practice for this of- fice.
I am honored to have been allowed to discharge the duties of County Attorney for the past 19 years and appreciate the trust placed in me by the citizens of this county. Fayette County is the finest place in the world to live, and I am con- fident this office will continue to work to keep it that way.”
