The Fayette County Spring Coyote Control Program began on Jan. 8, and ends April 30.

The contest is being held to give landowners, producers, and sportsmen an opportunity to assist in the control of coyotes in Fayette County. Coyotes cause predation on livestock and result in economic losses to agricultural producers in the county.

There are three categories in which one can win prize money: The most coyotes, the heaviest coyotes, and the heaviest female. In the most coyotes and heaviest coyote categories, the first through fifth will be awarded $100, $75, $50, $25 and $25. In the heaviest female category, prize money will be paid to the top three and awarded $50, $30 and $20.

Rules for the contest are as follows: All coyotes entered in the contest must be taken in Fayette County. Coyotes can be taken by any method, but it is illegal to buy a coyote from another person to enter a coyote in the contest.

The entire dead animal must be checked in and weighed on one of the official scales in order to be el igible for the contest. All coyotes entered in the program must be marked by spray painting the rear foot.

Official scales will be located at the Texas A&M AgriLife Exten- sion Service Office located at 255 Svoboda Ln. in La Grange, Farmers Co-op Mill and Feed located at 811 Bohlmann Ave. in Schulenburg and Round Top Farm and Ranch located at 2121 Hwy 237 N in Round Top. Official weights are taken at these three locations during their normal business hours. Please be respectful to businesses and their wishes on proper handling, hours, etc. They are volunteering their time, and we wish to keep their support and help.
