Flatonia holds off Shiner in close match

FLATONIA – Bulldogs boy’s basketball added a mark to the win column Jan. 5 at Bulldogs Gym by defeating Shiner High School with a final score of 72-67. After trailing early, Flatonia found their rhythm in a game that went down to the wire and controlled most of the second half with penetration towards the rim and keeping Shiner’s offense to a minimum. “It boiled down to us executing in the clutch,” said Flatonia head boy’s basketball coach Chris Sodek.

FLATONIA — Bulldogs boy’s basketball added a mark to the win column Jan.

“We weren’t perfect, but we did enough to get the win. Just live for another day, hope to get a little bit better each day, and maybe we can continue to get there.”

Flatonia junior guard Keegan Green recorded 18 points for the out- ing and controlled the floor through out the entire game on offense. “Just pushing the ball down,” Green said on his performance. “That’s really our offense. Kenyon Guyton getting big rebounds and doing better for us and everything like that.”

Shiner’s Jacquis Miller put in a fast break layup to take a 15-10 lead midway through the first quarter, then both teams traded baskets to end the first quarter at 21-17 in favor of Shiner. Flatonia hung tough and kept things close by tying the game and staying within a couple points in the second quarter until the Comanches hit a three and a layup to take a 49-43 lead with about four and a half minutes to go in the third quarter. Before this, the Bulldogs fought back with sturdy defense and running the floor, trading punches with the Comanches for the majority of the half. Flatonia then went on a run later in the game with the help of Guyton and Green’s layups, along with shot making, to surge ahead 56-49 at the end of the period three, slicing and dicing with pushing the ball and scoring for most of it.

Shiner’s long range shooting kept them in the game in the fourth quarter as they hit a three pointer at the 22 second mark in the fourth quarter to keep the game alive after more heavy lifting from Green and Guyton. The Comaches then made a scoop layup to put it at 69-67 with 11 seconds to go. The Bulldogs closed out the game with their free throw shooting as senior shooting guard Duke Sodek and senior center Kobe Burton combined for three huge free throw makes to win the game at 7267.
