WALLIS — Brazos softball was defeated in a scrimmage-like format Feb. 2 at Cougars Field by Mumford High School with a fi nal score of 2-0. It was a pretty evenly matched game, it was just that Mumford had a few more runners on base and were able to knock them home with a couple runs batted in. “I would say the little fundamentals,” said Brazos head softball coach Lauren Caka on the differences in the game.
“Just making a routine play. I feel like that kind of put a difference on the game. If we make routine plays, it’s a whole different ball game.” Both teams went scoreless for about six innings until Mumford had a big inning and scored two runs on a bases loaded jam that resulted in a run scoring on a grounder, then a walked in run. Ava Aguilar started the game for Brazos on the mound and the defense didn’t have a bad game, it was just one big inning from Mumford that propelled them to a win.
A defensive game from the start came down to who could come up with a few hits to spark a run. Mumford was able to get some key base hits and draw walks when needed in the final innings to sneak by with a 2-0 victory.
