SCHULENBURG — Round Top-Carmine girl’s basketball won a playoff match vs Prairie Lea High School Feb. 12 at Schulenburg High School’s Shorthorns Gym by a final score of 52-32. After trailing for most of the first half, the Cubettes made halftime adjustments that paid off as they controlled the entire second half. “Our defense,” said Round Top-Carmine interim head girl’s basketball coach Bayley Gold on the keys to victory.
“Overall, defense wins ball games. Our shots weren’t falling, but our defense made up for our offense.” Cubettes guard Jill Eilers hit a bunch of big shots in order to help her team stay alive in the playoffs. "It felt good to final ly start making my shots again,” Eilers said. “I felt like I helped the team out a lot.” Prairie Lea hit three shots in a row to close out the first quarter on a layup, jumper, and free throw to take an 11-4 lead after one.
Round Top-Carmine guard Tess Eilers, twin sister to Jill Eilers, had a nice second quarter and even helped her team grab the lead late on a jumper from inside the wing at the 2:33 mark to make it 17-15. The Cubettes would eventually take the lead at the end of the half on a three pointer from Jill Eilers, two free throws from Kennedy Flinn, and a jumper to go ahead 22-19 at intermission.
The Cubettes started the third quarter with a few free throws, then hit tons more free throws throughout the quarter and hit three jumpers in a row, two of them coming from Jill and Tess Eilers, putting it at 39-24 in favor of Round Top-Carmine at the end of the third quarter. Prairie Lea guard Azoria Lewis had a huge game and a huge fourth quarter hitting tons of layups throughout the match with a few in the fourth quarter to go along with some free throws. It wasn’t enough as the Cubettes finished the game with two three pointers and another jumper from Jill Eilers at the three minute mark to help cap off a 52-32 win.
