LA GRANGE — Fresh out of basketball, sophomore Gabe Mikeska went to his first golf tournament of the delayed season (because of basketball playoffs). Coach Trey Carter accompanied him play at Frisch Auf! Valley Golf Course in the La Grange Leopards Invitational.
He had a little rough start on the first hole with a doublebo gey on the Par 5 7th hole. But, he quickly settled in and almost made a hole-in-one on the Par 3 8th hole. The ball ended up within 6 inches of the hole to get some strokes back. His highlight for the day was his 10th hole Par 5. He powered a drive right down the middle of the fairway, outdriving the competitors in his group by 80 yards. That left him 185 in and he pierced a 5 iron to 12 feet, and then making the putt for an Eagle. He also had two other birdies, both on Par 5s.
Mikeska ended up in third in individual scores with an 82, even with two double bogeys in a row to finish. Two players fin ished with an 81, making Mikeska third.
“Gabe and I talked on the way and I told him to go out there and have fun. We had lower expectations just coming out of basketball the way he did. I’m excited for him the rest of this season. He’s a great kid with an outstanding attitude and personality. We will have him ready for his big tournaments coming up”, said Coach Carter.
Mikeska will compete next in Tomball Rosehill’s Invitational Tournament, Tuesday, March 5 at Glennloch Pines in Spring.
