The Columbus High School girl’s basketball team is heading back to the Alamodome as they’ve earned a bid to the state tournament for the second year in a row. They sealed the deal with a win against Aransas Pass Feb. 24 by a score of 61-44 earning the 3A Region IV championship.
Senior sharp shooter Karlee Mathis netted 18 points and freshman phenom Anaya Gardner added 23 points. These two have been the usual scorers for a cool, calm, and collected Lady Cardinals team led by legendary head coach Mike Albers.
Columbus will face Huntington High School today, (Thursday, Feb.29) at the Alamodome in San Antonio at 1:30 pm. Huntington is 35-6 on the season while the Lady Cardinals are 26-10. Columbus has a solid all around team, but it will defi nitely help their cause if they get Mathis and Gardner going. A second-straight tournament appearance for Columbus means a dynasty could be brewing for this talented and well-coached team.
