KATY — The La Grange High School boy’s basketball team was defeated by Houston Yates High School Feb. 19 at the Merrell Center in Katy by a final score of 81-52. Yates athleticism and ability to get to the rim was the difference in this game as the Lions took control from the very beginning.
I thought defensively, early, we were ok,” said La Grange head boy’s basketball coach Trent Collier.
“We kind of lost our traction.
Started turning the ball over and everybody we put in either took part in the turnovers or was not doing as of a good job on the defensive end of the court. We also missed, I don’t know, seven-eight easy layups in the first half, which is not typical of us. We come out in the second half and I thought we found some traction offensively. The thing about playing a team like Yates is, from top to bottom, the athleticism they have, we can’t match it. We have to be able to keep our composure and maintain our internal clock.
What a great group of seniors I have.”
Yates took a 7-0 lead on a floater with five and a half min - utes to go in the first quarter. La Grange kept it within a reasonable margin a few minutes later, then the Lions started to hit long range shots and convert layups to take a 27-9 lead at the end of the quarter. Leopards guard Clayton Cooper drove for a basket at the 5:55 mark in the second quarter to make it 33-11 before Yates made a bunch of layups and a couple shots to go into the locker room with a 42-16 lead at halftime.
The Lions continued their dominance in the third quar ter by forcing turnovers, which led to easy layups and they also maintained their accuracy from long range with three pointers and mid range shots as well. The fourth quarter consisted of Yates going in cruise control with a good amount of scoring, just at a slower pace to wrap up a 81-52 victory.
