Commissioner's court proclaims April as Autism Awareness Month

COLUMBUS — During the regular session of the Colorado County Commissioner’s Court on Feb. 26 in Columbus, Judge Ty Prause read aloud and presented a proclamation to Destiny Siptak, the executive director of the Turtle Wing Foundation in recognition of April as Autism Awareness Month.

Autism spectrum disorder impacts the nervous system. The symptoms and serverity can vary greatly.

The most common symptoms are difficulty with communica - tions, difficulty with social in teractions, obsessive interests in things and repeated behaviors.

With early recognition, therapies may reduce symptoms and support development and learning, and showing how they can manage and cope with their uniqueness.

She thanked the court for bringing awareness to autism every year. Siptak told the court, 'We have spent $1 million in direct services for children and families.'

She also explained that the mission of Turtle Wing is to create a culture of acceptance for those on the autism spectrum.
