BELLVILLE - The Sealy High School softball team defeated Bellville High School in an area match March 11 at Hacienda Field by a final score of 4-2. A close game led to the Lady Tigers finding ways to scrape out runs when it mattered most.
“The Bellville game’s al- ways competitive," said Sealy head softball coach Brittney Whitehead.
“We knew we had to come in and battle every inning and win every inning. I think those two big home runs were big ship turns for us. They came at very opportune times. Starting off with a home run was huge. That big lead off home run starting the game was the reason our team kept rallying behind that."
Sealy’s Blair Kram hit a go-ahead home run over the left field wall in the top of the sixth inning to surge her team ahead. "That's my first one this season," Kram said on the homer. "I hit the ball, I thought I was gonna get a double and it happened to go over."
Bellville still remains near the .500 mark and were very much in this game. "I feel like when we’re on and we’re hitting and everybody’s feeling it, things are good for us," said Bellville head softball coach Courtney Phillips. “The calls on the outside corner that I think both teams fought. They didn't think it was a strike, we didn't think it was a strike, but when it’s an umpire’s strike zone, you gotta play his game too."
Sealy hit a bomb to take an early lead in their first at bat and didn’t score again until Kram's home run, which gave the Lady Tigers a 3-2 lead in the top of sixth inning after Bellville tied the game at two on a grounder where the ball was botched and two runs were scored as a result in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Lady Tigers scored again in their final at bat on a shot to left field, which drove in a run from a few stolen bases and another base hit to make it 4-2 in the top of the seventh. Bellville drew a hitby- pitch at bat in the bottom of the seventh, but Sealy was able to strike out two batters and force a pop up to second base in order to wrap up a 4-2 victory.
